What to Expect from Your Lifestyle In-Home Newborn Portrait Session
I am so excited to capture your precious newborn. Your session will take place in the comfort and security of your own home using natural window light. My style is in-the-moment lifestyle, which means I will come into your home and beautifully capture these fleeting moments.
Following is some helpful information for your upcoming session with me.
Day of Session: Upon arrival, I will walk around your home and look for the best lit areas for family and sibling shots. These usually include the master bedroom, sofa and nursery. We may even use the kitchen! Please do not stress yourself out by cleaning your house getting ready for your session. You just had a baby, after all. Your job is to feed, comfort and love on your baby. If we are in the bedroom, just remove clutter from the nightstands so they will not be in the photographs. Bedding should be simple and white, if at all possible, as white reflects the light wonderfully.
Time of Day: For the best possible natural lighting indoors, I book sessions in the mornings usually around 10 a.m. I will usually arrive 30 minutes prior to allow time to look around the house to find the best lit area.
Your Baby: Your newborn is perfect just the way he or she is. I don't try and make babies sleep or place them in unnatural poses. I only suggest you have your baby in a simple white onesie that is form-fitting with no graphics or wording. This may mean you will need a preemie onesie, depending upon the size of your baby. I just don't want it too loose. I may have you take it off at some point to get nude or semi-nude (maybe just a diaper) photos as well.
In addition, please gather a few of your favorite swaddle blankets for your baby to be wrapped in. I recommend feeding your baby as much as he/she wants about 15 minutes prior to my arrival. Newborn sessions can take some time which is okay. I do not do major posing or have any expectations on how the baby should behave (awake or asleep.) We let the baby guide the session. The only important thing is that we capture this beautiful time in your life.
Siblings: I understand how big a change this is for the siblings in the house. I usually try to get sibling and family photos at the very beginning because the sibling(s) may lose interest pretty fast. Again, I have no great expectations for the siblings and will never force them into doing something they are not comfortable with. If they are of the age they can understand, you may want to prepare them for the session by telling them that a friend is coming over to visit and will be taking photos of your family. It is always best not to surprise them.
Mom & Dad: You are going to feel thrilled and exhausted. You will likely be experiencing the highest highs and maybe some of the lowest lows. Having a new baby, whether it's your first or fourth, is hard and wonderful all at the same time.My job is not to make this time in your life look perfect. My job is to show you just how beautiful it is. I want you to feel relaxed and comfortable while I am photographing your family. You don't need to be anything but yourself.
Wardrobe: It is highly recommended to wear solid neutral colors. It is best to stay away from red or black and busy patterns. Think coordinating, not matching. The most important thing is that the clothes will make you feel relaxed and comfortable. Wear "you." Mom - I highly recommend doing your hair & make-up, even if you do it yourself. You'll look and feel great! Please refer to my complete Style Guide you received via e-mail.

What to Expect from Your Lifestyle Outdoor Family Portrait Session
I am so excited to capture you and your family. Your session will take place at an outdoor location, such as the beach, local park or your own home - front porch, looking out the window or backyard. My style is in-the-moment lifestyle, which means I will beautifully capture raw, natural connection moments.
Following is some helpful information for your upcoming session with me.
Day of Session: Upon arrival, I will briefly go over the workflow of the session and will give guidance and directional prompts. These will mostly capture you and your family interacting with one another and not looking at the camera. No worries, though. I will also get a few shots of looking at the camera.
Time of Day: For outdoor sessions, I shoot during the golden hour, which is about an hour before sunset. Depending upon the time of year your session is scheduled will determine the exact time we will begin. If you have very young children that will be included, please read below which shows when sunset will occur during each season of the year. As you will see, fall and winter would work the best for young children with early bedtimes.
WINTER - we will meet between 4:45 p.m. & 6:45 p.m. These months could work for young families.
SPRING - in early April, shoots will start around 6:30 p.m. In late May and June, shoots will start around 7 - 7:30 p.m.
SUMMER - long summer months mean later sunsets. These sessions are best for families who have older children with later bedtimes.
FALL - the time changes considerably. We may start your shoot at 6 p.m. in the beginning of fall and by the end, we will start around 4:30 p.m. The fall months would work best for young families with early bedtimes.
For Babies (2 months & older): Your baby is perfect just the way he or she is. Since my lifestyle approach is baby-led, we will capture images in the most natural way. Being outdoors usually calms a baby and probably will put them to sleep. However, it is highly recommended you feed your baby about 30 minutes prior to the start time of the session. Dress your baby in simple comfortable clothes. Your baby is most comfortable in your own arms. We may lay the baby down on a blanket as well.
I do not do major posing or have any expectations on how the baby should behave (awake or asleep.) We let the baby guide the session. The only important thing is that we capture this beautiful time in your life.
Preparing for session with young children: I would encourage you to add a big chunk of buffer time into your "getting ready" timeline. This will allow time to find those lost shoes, or take care of last-minute diaper changes and all the other things that could happen at the last minute causing you to possibly run late. When parents are running late, frustrations are high and parents aren't feeling extra loving. It can set the tone for the entire session. Having more time eliminates that problem so everyone is super relaxed, happy and ready to go by the time we are ready to start the session.
Wardrobe: It is highly recommended to wear solid neutral colors. Try to stay away from red or black and busy patterns. Think coordinating, not matching. With this in mind, I suggest, Mom, choose your clothes first and then coordinate the rest of your family around that. If you don't feel confident, beautiful and comfortable, you won't love the photos no matter how great they are. Also, when deciding on your clothes, short dresses or skirts can be hard to move around in during the session, as we will be walking around, sitting down, laying down, etc. Therefore, wearing a longer dress/skirt or pants will work the best. The most important is that the clothes will make you feel relaxed and comfortable. Wear something you feel beautiful in and coordinate around that. Wear "you." Mom - I highly recommend doing your hair & make-up, even if you do it yourself. You'll look and feel great! Please refer to my complete Style Guide you received via e-mail.
Your Children: Children are not usually fond of having pictures taken. We'll give the children time to relax and try to capture their natural self. Don't worry if they are running about and active. I'll capture those natural moments of them just having fun. For the family shots, I'll just direct the parents to simply "be" with their child(ren) or hold them and we'll go from there. Make sure your little ones have plenty of rest and have had adequate snacks and water. You may want to bring extra with you. We can take a break if they need to have a snack. It's best to bring non-messy snacks so their little faces stay clean during the session. You may want to bring some wipes as well, just in case. You can prepare your toddler children for the session by letting them know a friend will be taking some photos of them - it's best not to surprise them.
Please arrive on time or be ready to start on time: Remember, the sun only stays up so long, so we want to be sure we take advantage of as much of the golden hour as we can. Therefore, it's important we start on time. Plan for traffic accordingly and plan to arrive a little early.
Feel free to e-mail me with any questions you may have here.
